Altos de Chavón: The Mediterranean Village That Captivates the World

March 10, 2025 2 min read

Perched above the Chavón River in La Romana, Altos de Chavón is one of the Caribbean’s most extraordinary landmarks — a hand-built replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village that has become a cultural epicenter for art, music, and architecture.

A Vision Brought to Stone

Conceived in the late 1970s by Italian set designer Roberto Copa and developed in partnership with Gulf+Western Industries, Altos de Chavón was built entirely by Dominican craftsmen using hand-cut coral stone. Every cobblestone street, every arch, every terracotta roof tile was placed by hand — a feat that took nearly a decade to complete.

Today the village is home to galleries, boutiques, gourmet restaurants, and one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated cultural institutions: the School of Design, affiliated with Parsons School of Design in New York.

The Amphitheater: Where Legends Perform

The 5,000-seat open-air Altos de Chavón Amphitheater has hosted some of the most iconic concerts in Latin American history. Frank Sinatra performed at its inaugural ceremony in 1982. Since then, artists from Gloria Estefan and Julio Iglesias to Marc Anthony and Shakira have graced its stage — all against a backdrop of the river gorge and jungle below.

Art, Culture & the School of Design

The Regional Institute of Art operates in partnership with Parsons New York, offering students from the Dominican Republic and across the world a world-class education in fashion design, graphic design, and interior design. The village’s galleries rotate exhibitions year-round, making it a living museum as much as a residential destination.

Dining and the Evening Experience

As the sun sets over the Chavón River gorge, Altos de Chavón transforms. Restaurants like Casa del Río offer candlelit dining on terraces suspended above the river. The cobblestone plazas fill with guests from Casa de Campo’s villas and from around the island — a reminder that this village exists at the intersection of history, art, and luxury living.

For anyone considering property at Casa de Campo, proximity to Altos de Chavón is not simply a convenience — it is an extraordinary privilege.
